Concrete work in the Eastern Suburbs
The Eastern Suburbs run from the terrace streets of Paddington and Woollahra out to the coast at Bondi, Bronte, Clovelly, Coogee and Maroubra. Steep streets, sandstone, sand, salt air and tight sites make concrete work here different from the flatter suburbs to the west. We arrange concrete work across the Waverley, Woollahra and Randwick council areas.
Typical Eastern Suburbs jobs
- Steep driveways down to garages below street level, where grip and drainage matter.
- Pool surrounds in exposed aggregate or honed concrete, often on tight, sloping blocks.
- Terrace courtyards and rear-lane parking in Paddington and Woollahra.
- Retaining walls cut into sandstone or holding sand on sloping blocks.
- Strata driveways and paths in apartment blocks, often staged so residents can still get in.
Ground: sandstone and sand
Ridges and headlands in the Eastern Suburbs are Hawkesbury sandstone. It is solid to build on, but it can sit just below the surface, so excavation often needs rock breaking. Water also runs along the top of the rock after rain, so drainage behind walls and under slabs matters.
Lower areas, particularly around Randwick, Kensington and parts of Bondi, sit on deep wind-blown sand. Sand drains well, but it needs compacting in layers and must be contained so it does not wash out from under a slab or footing. The concreter will look at what is under your site before pricing.
Salt air and reinforcement
Close to the coast, salt in the air can reach the steel inside concrete over time and cause it to rust, which cracks and spalls the concrete above it. Good practice near the beach is enough concrete cover over the reinforcement, a dense, well-compacted mix, and proper curing. Structural work may specify a higher concrete strength for coastal exposure. Ask how the quote allows for it.

Steep driveways
Many Eastern Suburbs garages sit below or well above street level. A steep driveway needs a finish that grips in rain and when leaves fall, a transition at the top and bottom that cars do not scrape, and drainage that stops water running into the garage. Exposed aggregate and heavy broom finishes are the usual choices. Grooves cut across the slope help on the steepest driveways. See concrete driveways.
Pools and council rules
Pool surrounds are common, and on tight blocks they often sit close to boundaries and fences. Pool barrier rules apply, and raising ground levels near a fence can affect compliance. For new pools, the surround is usually part of the approval. Waverley, Woollahra and Randwick councils each have their own requirements for driveway crossings, heritage areas and works near boundaries. Check with your council before work starts. See pool surrounds.
Access and parking
Narrow streets, limited parking and busy roads make truck and pump positioning harder here. Some jobs need permits to use the road or footpath for a pump or truck. The concreter will check access during the site visit and include pumping or permits on the quote if needed.
Getting a quote
Send photos of the area and the street, and mention slope, rock, pools and whether it is a strata property. A local concreter will measure and give you a written quote. Planning ranges are on our price guide, and taller walls are covered on concrete retaining walls.
