Concrete work in Western Sydney
Western Sydney is where much of the city's concreting happens: older suburbs being renovated, new release areas being built and light industrial estates being extended. We arrange concrete work across Parramatta, Cumberland, Blacktown and Penrith council areas, from Parramatta and Merrylands to Blacktown, Marsden Park, St Marys and Penrith.
Typical Western Sydney jobs
- Driveway replacements on post-war and 1970s-90s homes.
- Granny flat slabs, built to engineer's drawings as part of the approval.
- Shed, carport and alfresco slabs.
- Side paths where old paths have dropped along the house.
- Commercial driveways and hardstand for warehouses, retail and strata sites.
Ground: reactive clay
Most of Western Sydney sits on clay weathered from shale, and much of it is reactive. It swells after rain and shrinks in dry spells, which moves slabs, paths and driveways. That is why so many older Western Sydney driveways have cracks along the house side, where downpipes, gardens and shade keep the ground wetter.
Concrete on reactive clay needs a properly prepared base, reinforcement placed correctly, sensible joint spacing and drainage that keeps water away from slab edges. Structural slabs for granny flats and extensions are designed for the site's soil classification.
Near the Nepean River around Penrith, river flats bring different soils and, in some areas, flood-related planning controls. Check your property's planning information if you are building.
Heat
Western Sydney summers are much hotter than the coast. Penrith and surrounding areas regularly see some of Sydney's highest temperatures. Heat makes concrete set faster and dries the surface quickly, which can cause cracking and weak surfaces. Concreters manage this with early starts, set-retarding admixtures, windbreaks and shade, and proper curing. On extreme heat days, the pour may be rescheduled.

Granny flats and secondary dwellings
Granny flats are common across Western Sydney's larger blocks. The slab for a granny flat is structural, designed by an engineer and part of the approval. The concreter builds it to the drawings, and inspections may be needed before the pour. Services such as plumbing and conduit are set in before concreting. See concrete slabs.
Council requirements
Parramatta, Cumberland, Blacktown and Penrith councils each control driveway crossings on council land and have requirements for levels and construction. Retaining walls, structures and some slabs need approval. Check with your council before work starts.
Finishes
Pale finishes stay noticeably cooler in Western Sydney summers. Exposed aggregate hides red dust and tyre marks well. Charcoal coloured concrete is popular on new builds but gets hot underfoot. Plain broom finish remains the economical choice. See our finish guide.
Getting a quote
Send photos, a rough size and the access, and mention any approvals or engineering drawings. A local concreter will measure and give you a written quote. Planning ranges are on our price guide. For commercial work, see commercial concrete driveways.
